The above picture has hung in my house for almost 10 years now. It's one of many I have by Swedish artist Carl Larsson. It is my favorite of all his works. It reminds me of my younger sister and myself. All the hours we spent at the dinning room table~ dinner, lunch, homework, card games, board games, having a "talk" with mom and dad when we were in trouble. All these things were done at the dining room table. So many memories.
So, here's the thing, I have to confess that I really don't like to cook. I'm not sure if it's the mess that it creates, or the whole planning ahead thing(planning ahead, what's that?). Whatever it is, I'm just not that into it. It's really strange too, because my mom is an amazing cook and my sisters both enjoy cooking as well. I guess that cooking gene didn't get passed down to me. I usually just throw something together last minute, we are so busy during the week, I am never sure what time we will actually get around to dinner. While we always eat together, it is never the beautiful sit down dinners I had growing up(The only time I do those is when my mom is over.;-)). Usually, we just plate it up and sit around the kitchen island together. So... yesterday I decided that I'm going to try once a week to do a REALLY nice sit down dinner. I'm talking nice dishes, table cloth, candles, the whole nine(we'll see how long this lasts). After all, what do I buy all the pretty dishes and tablecloths for? Oh, another thing you should know, I love meals of the fix-it and forget-it variety. I really don't know what I would do without my crock pot. I use it for just about everything. For last nights meal, I made good old fashioned pot roast with carrots and red potatoes, garden salad, GIANT artichokes and sourdough rolls. Super easy and so yummy! Here's how our nice sit down dinner went~
Ready for the crock. Carrots, red bell peppers, onion, and red potatoes mixed together with salt, pepper and olive oil.
The spoon is resting.
The table is set, with vintage table cloth and Staffordshire Ironstone china in Coventry Blue. I like to mix-n-match stuff, as long as it's in the same color scheme.
Blue Calico pitcher with ivy and the ever present mushrooms. ;-)
I love these glasses!!! My sweet sis gave them to me as a birthday gift about 4 years ago. They are from Crate and Barrel. I love all the little bubbles trapped in the glass.
Jake was a little unsure about the artichokes at first, but he ended up loving them.
Ahhh...coffee, other wise known a life blood.;-)
Cleaning up. I love washing pretty dishes.
No better feeling than a clean kitchen after a nice meal. The kids are in bed, all is quiet. The smell of recently extinguished candles lingers in the air. Time to pour another cup of coffee, sit down and catch up on who was voted off Dancing with the Stars, who is going to be "a little pitchy dawg" on American Idol, and what freaky thing is going to happen on Fringe(I love this show). While I watch, I will be working on some cute little critters. I hope to have a sneak peak up tomorrow.
Hope you all have a lovely Wednesday!
